Today we are announcing that Tally has raised a seed round of $4.2 million, led by Harbour Ventures, with help from two dozen founders and operators who have used Tally from the beginning.

We want to explain what that means for you, and what it does not.

## Why we raised

For two years, Tally has been paid for by its customers. We grew slowly and on purpose. We turned down money twice because it came with plans that were not ours.

We are raising now for a simple reason: customers are asking for things we cannot build with seven people fast enough. Alerts. A better API. Support in more time zones. Data residency in the EU. Each of these is a team's worth of work, and we do not want to choose between them for another two years.

## What changes

**The team grows.** We are hiring eight people this year: four engineers, a designer, two people in support, and our first person in Europe. The jobs are on our careers page, and we would love you to share them.

**The roadmap speeds up.** Alerts will ship before the end of the year. EU data hosting will follow early next year.

**Support covers more hours.** By December, someone will answer your questions during working hours in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

## What doesn't change

**Pricing.** We are not raising prices because we raised money. The free plan stays. Your current price stays for at least two years.

**Your data.** Your data is yours. We do not sell it, share it or use it to train anything. That was true before and it is written into our agreement with our investors.

**How we build.** Small releases, every few weeks, with honest notes about what changed. You can read every one of them on our [changelog](https://launch.ghostcms.templates.codememory.com/changelog/).

**Who we build for.** Tally is for small teams who want to understand their product without hiring a data team. That is not going to change because we have more money in the bank.

## Why Harbour

We talked to fourteen firms. We chose Harbour because the partner who led the round, Sam Oduya, had been a Tally customer at his previous company, and his first question in our first meeting was about our free plan, not about growth. He wanted to know how we would keep it.

Two dozen founders and operators also joined the round, most of them long-time customers. Several of them have already sent us feature requests. We expected nothing less.

Our first office. We have been fully remote for two years; this is a room for the days we want to be in the same place.

## What we are nervous about

Honestly: growing too fast. Seven people who know each other well can make decisions over lunch. Fifteen cannot. We are writing down how we make decisions before we hire, not after, and we will share what we learn.

We are also nervous about losing the thing customers tell us they like most: that when they write to support, the person who answers often built the feature they are asking about. We intend to keep that as long as we can.

🙏

To every customer who has paid for Tally over the last two years: thank you. You made this possible, and you are the reason we could say no until we found the right yes.

## Where the money goes

Roughly, the round pays for three years of work. About 70% goes to the new people and the people we already have. About 15% goes to infrastructure, mostly to hosting in the EU and to redundancy we should have had anyway. The rest is a reserve, because we have been a small company long enough to know that the unexpected always costs money.

We are not spending on big marketing campaigns. Most of our customers found us through a friend, a blog post or a chart someone shared with them. We intend to keep earning customers that way.

## How to follow along

We will write about what we learn as the team grows, including the mistakes. The best way to read it is the Tuesday newsletter, which you can join from any page of this blog. And if you know someone who would be a great fit for one of the jobs, please send them our way. The best people we have hired so far all came from customer introductions.

#### Will Tally be sold in a few years?

That is not the plan. We raised enough to build a sustainable company, not to find a buyer.

#### Does the free plan change?

No. The free plan keeps its current limits.
