Tally 2.0: a new chart engine, flexible dashboards and workspaces

Tally 2.0 is the biggest release we have made. We rebuilt the chart engine, redesigned dashboards from the ground up and added workspaces for teams. Everything you built in 1.x still works, and it now looks better and loads faster.

What's new

  • New: A chart engine that draws up to a million points smoothly.
  • New: Dashboards with a flexible grid. Drag charts to any size and position.
  • New: Workspaces. Group dashboards by team, with their own members and settings.
  • New: Notes on charts. Mark a launch, an outage or a holiday right on the line.
  • Improved: Every chart can be exported as PNG, SVG or CSV.
  • Improved: Sign-in with Google and Microsoft accounts.
  • Fixed: Charts with gaps in the data no longer draw a misleading straight line.

Why we rebuilt the charts

The old chart engine was the first code we wrote, a year ago. It was fine for a few thousand points and painful above that. Customers with large products were waiting several seconds for a chart, and some charts simply gave up.

The new engine draws on the graphics card when it can and does the heavy work away from the main page, so scrolling never freezes. A chart with a year of hourly data now draws in under a quarter of a second on a normal laptop.

Dashboards, redesigned

The old dashboards were a single column of charts. People made it work, but they asked for two things again and again: put small numbers next to each other, and make the important chart big. The new grid does both. You can also add text blocks, so a dashboard can explain itself.

The first time I opened the new dashboards, I rearranged everything for an hour. Then I deleted half the charts. In a good way.

Workspaces

As our customers grew, one shared list of dashboards became crowded. A workspace is a separate area for a team, with its own dashboards and members. Marketing can have theirs and product can have theirs, and both can still share a chart with each other.

Upgrading

There is nothing to do. Your dashboards were moved to the new grid automatically, in the same order. If a chart looks wrong after the move, tell us and we will fix it the same day.

Will 1.x stay available?

No. Every account moved to 2.0 on release day.

Does the new engine work on older computers?

Yes. On older machines it falls back to the previous way of drawing, which is slower but complete.
